Joan E. Thompson
Joan, a cherished mother, grandmother, and proud Air Force wife, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2023, at the age of 85. Born in Chicago, Joan remained a dedicated Illinois resident, spending her final years in Springfield.
Joan was the adored wife of the late Michael T. Sr., who served 22 years in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Senior Master Sergeant. Their 58-year marriage was a testament to love and resilience, with Joan proudly supporting Michael’s military career.
The daughter of the late William. and Elizabeth, and sister to the late Anne, Joan was a beacon of strength and love in her family. She lovingly passed these traits to her two sons: Robert and Michael. As a grandmother, she cherished every moment with her grandchildren, Emily and Ryan.
Joan graduated from Lincoln High School in Chicago, class of 1956. After school, she devoted herself to her family and community, excelling as a homemaker and displaying immense love and care in all her endeavors.
Joan’s generous spirit led her to volunteer as a tutor for underprivileged children, showing her commitment to education and inclusivity. She was also an active member of the Springfield Air Force Base Spouse Club, often representing the group at national events. Her warmth and hospitality won her several accolades.
In her free time, Joan enjoyed gardening, collecting vintage postcards, and was an avid fan of classical music. An enthusiastic cook, she delighted her family with her culinary skills. Joan’s beautiful singing voice was a staple in the choir at her local community center, where she was a beloved member.
Joan was a gifted storyteller, captivating friends and family with tales of her life experiences and historical events. She had a unique way of bringing history to life, imparting wisdom and fostering a deep respect for heritage in her family.
Joan’s life was marked by her service to others, her unwavering dedication to her family, and her pride in her husband’s military service. She leaves behind a legacy of love and inspiration, deeply missed yet enduring in the memories of those she touched.
